Check your shop management system first. Shopmonkey, Tekmetric, AutoLeap and Shop-Ware all include texting on some plans, and AutoLeap and Shop-Ware sell AI call answering. If yours does not cover it, most AI receptionist plans run about $25 to $300 a month on the pages we checked, and live answering about $250 to $2,100.
Prices below come from each vendor's own page, as listed on October 22, 2026. They change often, so check before you sign.
What should an auto repair answering service do?
Get the car on the schedule with the right details, and leave everything technical to your advisor. A driver calling about a warning light wants to know when you can look at it. That is the job.
- Book drop-offs and diagnostic time from your real schedule.
- Collect the vehicle: year, make, model and what the driver notices.
- Handle "is my car ready?" calls, which only works if it can read your shop system.
- Route breakdowns safely. Anyone in an unsafe spot should be told to call 911 first.
- Hand estimates, approvals and complaints to a person.
Does your shop system already answer calls?
Some do part of the job, some sell an add-on and some only text. Here is what the vendors' own pages show.
| Shop system | What it lists | Calls and texts |
|---|---|---|
| Tekmetric | Start $199, Grow $349, Scale $439 a month; unlimited users | Two-way texting from Scale; Tekmetric Phones is in beta for RingCentral shops; we found no AI call answering |
| Shopmonkey | Basic $239 for 3 users, Clever $399, Genius $499 a month | Two-way texting and a business number on every plan; a CRM add-on at $349 a month includes a "front desk assistant" |
| AutoLeap | Essentials $199, Pro $349, Elite $449 a month | Two-way texting from Pro; AIR, its AI receptionist, is $1 a call or $99 a month for 200 calls |
| Shop-Ware | Startup $279, Pro $389, Master $499 a month | Unlimited two-way texting from Pro; an AI receptionist with no public price |
| Mitchell 1 Manager SE | No price listed | MessageCenter adds two-way texting as an option |
Most of these list lower prices if you pay yearly. If your system's add-on answers and books the way you want, it is likely the simplest choice, because it already knows your schedule and your customers.
What do standalone services cost?
If your shop system does not answer calls, or you want a person on the line, these are the common options.
| Service | Type | What it lists |
|---|---|---|
| Ruby | Live receptionists | $250 a month for 50 minutes, $395 for 100, $720 for 200, $1,725 for 500 |
| Smith.ai | Live receptionists | $300 a month for 30 calls, $810 for 90, $2,100 for 300; booking adds $1.50 a call |
| Smith.ai AI-first | AI receptionist | Free for 25 calls, then $3.00 a call; Pro from $150 a month for 75 calls |
| Aira | AI receptionist | $24.95 a month for 30 calls, up to $299 for 600 calls |
| Goodcall | AI receptionist | $79 a month for 100 unique callers, $129 for 500, $299 for 2,000 |
| AgentZap | AI receptionist | $109 a month for 150 minutes plus a $499 setup fee; says it books into Tekmetric, Mitchell 1 and Shop-Ware |
Why do missed calls matter more for Texas shops now?
Because the yearly inspection no longer brings most cars in. Since January 1, 2025, Texas DPS says non-commercial vehicles no longer need a safety inspection before registration, under House Bill 3297. Emissions tests are still required in Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris and Montgomery counties.
So more of your work starts with a call or a search. In a CallRail survey of 1,000 US consumers, 21% said they immediately call another business when nobody answers, and 42% said they leave a voicemail.
Live, AI or text back: which fits a shop?
| Live answering | AI receptionist | Missed-call text-back | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who answers | A person, on the call | AI, on the call | A text within a minute, after the call is missed |
| Good at | Upset customers, long questions | Rush hours, after hours, quick booking | Drivers who hang up at the counter rush |
| Weak at | Cost per call | Unusual questions | Callers who will not text |
| Needs your shop system for | Status calls | Booking and status calls | Booking |
Many shops mix them: a text-back on every missed call, AI after hours and the advisor for estimates and approvals.
What should it never say or do?
Anything that belongs to your advisor or your technicians.
- No diagnosis. A shaking engine could be many things.
- No quotes. The estimate comes after the car is checked.
- No approvals. Work is authorized with the advisor, on your system.
- No promised ready times it cannot see.
- No unsafe advice. Someone stuck on a highway hears "call 911," then gets your towing partner's number if you choose to share it.
How do you connect it to your shop system?
Ask for a live demo that books into your real schedule, not a slide. AutoLeap says AIR works with your current shop software, and AgentZap says it books into Tekmetric, Mitchell 1 and Shop-Ware. Check four things on the demo:
- The booking lands in your schedule with the vehicle and the concern.
- The advisor sees the whole conversation.
- Status calls get a real answer, or go to a person.
- STOP and opt-out work on every text.
When is the built-in option enough?
If your shop system's add-on books calls and texts back the way you want, use it. If calls, texts, web requests and reviews live in four places and nobody can see which ads bring cars, a single system is worth more. Elevate, a Houston AI, software and marketing studio led by Justin Davis, builds that system around the shop software you keep: a missed-call text-back, follow-up on declined work, a review ask after pickup and one view of where your work comes from. Compare the wider options in AI receptionist vs answering service.
