Meta Ads

Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) can bring in leads for a local service business, but you pay two separate bills: ad spend, paid to Meta, and a fee for whoever makes and runs the ads. LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks put lead-campaign costs at roughly $32 to $51 per lead in categories close to local service work. Whether that pays depends on how fast you reply and what a job is worth.

The two bills

Every Meta ads plan has two parts, and agencies sometimes blur them.

  1. Ad spend. The money Meta charges to show your ads. You choose it. It is paid to Meta directly.
  2. The service fee. What a person or agency charges to make the ads, set up tracking and manage the campaigns.

Our content and Meta ads service runs $1,500 to $6,000 a month. That is our service fee. Ad spend is paid to Meta directly and is not included. Where you land in the range depends on how much content gets made and how many campaigns run each month.

Ask any agency to show both numbers separately. If a quote hides ad spend inside the fee, you cannot see what you are paying for.

What a lead costs

LocaliQ, in partnership with WordStream, publishes Facebook ads benchmarks. The cost per lead for lead campaigns in the 2026 edition:

Category Cost per lead (lead campaign)
Home & Home Improvement $42.95
Personal Services $38.09
Beauty & Personal Care $50.91
Physicians & Surgeons $32.14
Industrial & Commercial $35.87

These are published averages across many advertisers, not Houston figures. They are only a starting point, and a good offer, strong creative and fast replies can beat them. A weak offer can be far worse. A "lead" here is a form fill, not a booked job.

A worked example

This is arithmetic using the Home & Home Improvement benchmark of $42.95 per lead and an example close rate of 3 in 10. It is not a forecast.

Monthly ad spend Leads at $42.95 Jobs at 3 in 10
$1,000 about 23 about 7
$1,500 about 35 about 10
$3,000 about 70 about 21

Now add the service fee. If you spend $1,500 on ads and pay a $1,500 fee, you are in for $3,000 a month. If that makes 10 jobs, your marketing cost is about $300 per job.

Is that good? It depends on what a job is worth.

  • If an average job pays you $200, this does not work.
  • If it pays $500 in revenue, the margin is thin once you do the work.
  • If it pays $2,000 or more, it likely does.

Work this out before you spend. Take your total monthly cost, divide by the jobs you expect, and compare to your profit per job.

What makes Meta ads work for a local business

A clear offer. "Free estimate" with no hook is easy to ignore. A specific offer for a specific service in a specific area is stronger.

Creative that looks like your business. Short vertical video for Reels and Stories, real photos of real work and plain words on screen. We make ads like this for our own shop, UPPF Studio. You can see them on the Marketing page and read the full story in the UPPF Studio case study.

A landing page that matches the ad. The ad promises one thing, the page shows the same thing, with one clear action.

Tracking. The Meta pixel and Conversions API tell Meta which leads turned into real actions, so it can find more people like them. We set both up on your site.

A fast reply. The ad only pays if someone answers the lead. See speed to lead. Our approach connects each ad to a CRM and an automatic text, so a lead at 9 PM gets a reply at 9 PM.

Ideas that work for trades

  • A short video of the crew arriving, fixing the problem and cleaning up.
  • Real photos of finished jobs, with a plain caption about what was done.
  • A map or list of the areas you serve, so people know you come to them.
  • A seasonal offer. Think an AC tune-up before summer or a roof check before hurricane season.
  • A short quote from a real customer, used with their permission.

Avoid stock photos. People can tell.

Our first 90 days, in plain words

  1. Month one: set up the Meta pixel and Conversions API, build the landing page, launch a small set of ads and make sure every lead reaches you.
  2. Month two: read the numbers, drop the weak ads and make more like the winners.
  3. Month three: decide with you whether to raise the budget, hold it or stop.

Anyone who promises a result in week one is guessing.

Lead form or landing page

Meta lets you collect a lead inside the app or send people to your site. The in-app form is quick for the customer. A landing page can explain more and filter out people who are not a fit. We test both and let the numbers decide. For reference, LocaliQ lists lead-campaign clicks in Home & Home Improvement at $2.18 against $0.63 for traffic campaigns, because the first aims at form fills and the second at visits. Compare cost per lead, not cost per click.

What a good monthly report shows

Ad spend, leads, cost per lead, how many became booked jobs and what changes next month. In plain words, not a dashboard of numbers nobody reads.

Rules that matter for some trades

Platforms restrict some categories. Meta's Health and Wellness policy limits ads for cosmetic products and procedures to people 18 and older, and bans close-ups that pinch body fat. If you run a med spa or salon, the ads need to follow those rules, and we write them to.

What to ask any agency

  • Who owns the ad account, the page and the pixel?
  • Are ad spend and your fee shown separately?
  • What do you report each month, and can I read it?
  • How many new ads or creative tests do you make a month?
  • How do you track leads to booked jobs?
  • What happens to my account if I leave?

With us, your ad account and your page stay yours, and the monthly report is in plain words: reach, leads and spend.

When ads are a poor idea

Do not start ads yet if:

  • You cannot take more work this month.
  • Nobody answers leads within minutes.
  • Your average job is small and your margin is thin.
  • Your website or Google profile is a mess. Ads send people to both.

Fix those first. They cost less and make every ad dollar work harder. Our website guide is a good place to start.

A note on Houston

Houston is big and varied. A radius around your shop can cover very different neighborhoods, and cost per lead will vary with competition in your trade. We found no Houston-specific benchmark we trust, so we do not quote one. Your own account data after the first month is a better guide than any average.

Questions owners ask

How much should a local service business spend on Meta ads?

It depends on your cost per lead, your close rate and your job value. In the worked example in this guide, $1,500 a month in ad spend buys about 35 leads at a $42.95 benchmark. Check that your average job can cover ad spend plus any management fee.

Is ad spend included in the Elevate price?

No. Our content and Meta ads service is $1,500 to $6,000 a month. Our service fee. Ad spend is paid to Meta directly and is not included.

Do I own the ad account?

You should. Your ad account and your page stay yours with us, and we set up the Meta pixel and Conversions API on your site.

Meta ads or Google ads for a local service business?

Google ads catch people already searching for you. Meta ads reach people in their feed before they search. Many service businesses use both. We run Meta, plus Google Business Profile for map searches.
