A plumbing answering service makes sure a burst pipe at 2 AM reaches a person or a booked slot instead of voicemail. You have three choices: live operators billed by the minute or call, an AI receptionist billed by the month, or a text-back. Many shops mix them: AI or text first, and a person for emergencies.

For the general comparison across trades, see AI receptionist vs answering service. This is the plumbing version, with plumbing's emergencies up front.

What does a plumbing answering service do?

It answers when you cannot, sorts emergencies from routine work, takes the address and the problem, and either books a time or reaches your on-call plumber. A good one also saves every call on the customer's record. Voicemail does none of this, and many callers will not leave one.

In a CallRail survey of 1,000 US consumers, 42% said they leave a voicemail when nobody answers, and 21% said they immediately call another business. With water on the floor, waiting for a callback is a lot to ask.

What do the options cost?

Live answering is billed by minutes or calls and starts around $250 to $300 a month on the pages we checked. AI receptionists start under $100 a month. Prices below are from each vendor's pricing page, as listed on October 20, 2026.

Service Type What it lists
Ruby Live receptionists, 24/7 $250 a month for 50 minutes, $395 for 100, $720 for 200, $1,725 for 500
Smith.ai Live receptionists (human-first plans) $300 a month for 30 calls, $810 for 90, $2,100 for 300; extra calls $8.50 to $11.50 each
Smith.ai AI-first AI receptionist Free for 25 calls a month, then $3.00 a call; Pro from $150 a month for 75 calls
Aira AI receptionist $24.95 a month for 30 calls, up to $299 for 600 calls
Goodcall AI receptionist $79 a month for 100 unique callers, $129 for 500, $299 for 2,000
Text-back built for you Text first, AI follow-up Priced on a free call, flat and in writing

Smith.ai prices its human-first and AI-first plans on separate pages, so compare like with like. Ruby's page does not say how minutes over your plan are billed, so ask about that.

What would a busy month cost?

Example: a shop sends 120 calls a month to the service, at about 3 minutes each, or 360 minutes. This is arithmetic on the list prices above, not a quote.

Service Cheapest plan that covers it A month
Ruby The 500-minute plan, since 200 minutes is not enough $1,725
Smith.ai 90 calls for $810, plus 30 extra calls at $10.50 $1,125
Aira 90 calls for $59.95, plus 30 extra calls at $1.00 $89.95
Goodcall 100 unique callers for $79, plus 20 more at 79 cents, if every call is a different person $94.80

The gap is large. A live person costs more because a live person is doing the work. Whether that is worth it depends on how many of those calls are emergencies that need judgment.

Live person or AI: which handles plumbing calls better?

A live person is better at judgment: a panicked caller, an older customer, a call that is half emergency and half question. AI is better at volume and cost: it answers every call at once, never sounds tired and costs a fraction per call. Text-back is the lightest option. It does not answer the call, but it catches the lead in the first minute.

Live answering service AI receptionist Text-back
Answers the call Yes, a person Yes, a voice AI No, it texts back
Good at Panic, judgment, older callers Volume, nights, cost Catching leads fast, cheaply
Weak at Cost per minute, busy nights Odd requests, upset callers People who will not text
Billing By minute or call Monthly, by calls A monthly plan

The honest take: a solo plumber who misses 20 calls a month may need nothing more than a text-back or a basic AI tool. A shop that sells 24/7 emergency service should have a person, or at least a reliable on-call hand-off, behind whatever answers first.

What should any answering setup do with an emergency?

Every option should spot plumbing emergencies and reach your on-call plumber right away. Write the rules down before you sign anything, and test them with a fake call.

  • Flooding, a burst pipe or a sewage backup. Page the on-call plumber. Remind the caller to shut off the main water valve if they can do it safely.
  • Gas smell. Tell them to leave and call 911 or the gas company from outside. Never book it as a normal job.
  • No water at all, or a water heater leaking near electrical. Top of the list.
  • Everything else gets a booked time in the next open window.

Price questions get your standard service-call or diagnostic fee, if you publish one. The job price stays with the plumber who sees the problem.

Custom vs rented vs doing it yourself

Rented service Built for you Doing it yourself
What it is A live or AI service with its own scripts A text-back and AI assistant on your number, tied to your calendar and CRM Your cell, voicemail and callbacks
Cost By minutes, calls or month A build priced on a free call, then a flat monthly plan Your evenings
Emergencies Their script Your rules Whenever you check
Records In their app On your customer record, in accounts you own In your head

What should you ask before you sign?

  • How are minutes or calls counted: ring time, hold time, spam calls?
  • Can you book into my calendar, or only take messages?
  • What exactly happens with a burst pipe at 2 AM? Walk me through it.
  • Do I get recordings or transcripts on the customer record?
  • If texts go out, are they from my number, and is it registered for business texting?
  • Is there a contract, a setup fee or a minimum term?

Questions owners ask

How much does a plumbing answering service cost?

On the pages we checked in October 2026, live services start at $250 a month for 50 minutes (Ruby) and $300 a month for 30 calls (Smith.ai). AI receptionists run from a free tier of 25 calls a month (Smith.ai) to $24.95 for 30 calls (Aira) and up. Your bill depends on how many calls you send.

Can an AI receptionist handle plumbing emergencies?

It can recognize words like flooding, burst pipe or gas and pass the call or text to your on-call plumber right away. It should not give repair advice beyond basic safety, like shutting off the main valve if that is safe.

Should an answering service quote plumbing prices?

Only a published service-call or diagnostic fee, if you have one. Job prices depend on what the plumber finds, so they stay with you.

Is a text-back enough instead of an answering service?

For a small shop that can call back within minutes during the day, often yes. If you sell 24/7 emergency service, pair it with a live person or a reliable on-call hand-off at night.

Does Elevate run a live answering service?

No. We build AI receptionists and missed-call text-back that answer from facts you approve and hand hard calls to you. Each build is priced on a free 15 to 30 minute call.
